LILACS - THE GENUS SYRINGA

Syringa is a genus of shrubs and small trees native to Southeastern Europe and Asia. They have been cultivated and hybridized for many years. In general, they are drought and cold tolerant, prefer well-drained soils, their flowers are various shades of white, pink, purple, blue, red, and are variously scented. Many of these species have numerous varieties and hybrids. It is important to read about each variety you plan to purchase to make sure you understand its growth and flowering habits, as well as any special soil or growing conditions that the variety prefers. Below you will find a species list and general comments about each species.

S. debelderi Origin: southern Korea. Height: 2-3 feet. Hardy to - 20 degrees.
S. emodi Origin: Afghanistan. Height: to 15 feet. Drops leaves during droughts.
S. josikaea Hungarian Lilac - Origin: southeast Europe. Height: to 15 feet. Flowers unscented. Blooms in May.
S. julianae Origin: western China. Height: to 5 feet. Hardy to - 30 degrees.
S. komarowii Komarov's Lilac - Origin: China. Height: to 10 feet.
S. lanciniata Origin: China. Height: to 12 feet. Very showy. Many hybrids.
S. meyeri Origin: China. Height: to 5 feet. Flowers strongly scented. Blooms late summer, early fall.
S. microphylla Littleleaf Lilac - Origin: China. Height: 8-20 feet. Flowers year-round, sweet scented.
S. oblata Broadleaf Lilac - Origin: China/Korea. Early bloomer.
S. patula Korean Lilac - Origin: Korea. Small to medium sized shrub. Flowers have spicy fragrance.
S. pekinensis Origin: China. Height: to 25 feet. Flowers honey-scented. Blooms late June.
S. pinnatifolia Origin: western China. Height: 6-8 feet. Difficult to find.
S. potaninii Origin: China. Height: to 8 feet. Very drought tolerant.
S. pubescens Origin: China. Height: to 18 feet. Flowers have spicy clove fragrance.
S. reflexa Origin: central China. Height: to 12 feet. Flowers nodding.
S. reticulata Origin: northern China/Japan. Height: to 30 feet. Flowers honey-scented. Blooms late June.
S. sweginzowii Origin: China. Height: to 10 feet. Flowers have spicy scent. Prefers shade.
S. tigerstedtii Origin: China. Very hardy.
S. tomentella Origin: China. Height: to 15 feet.
S. villosa Origin: China. Height: to 12 feet. Good for hedging.
S. vulgaris Common Lilac - Origin: southeast Europe. Height: to 10 feet. At least 14 varieties.
S. wolfii Origin: Mongolia. Flowers unscented.
S. yunnanensis Yunnan Lilac - Origin: southwest China. Height: 10-12 feet. Blooms late.
