General Characteristics: Spends most of the year hidden from view, underground. Succulent, radiating, fingerlike leaves begin to appear after the first winter rain/snow. Leaves disappear in early May and flower buds take their place. Native to the Big Bear Valley. Flowers & Fruits: Flowers in late Spring. Colors vary from white to pink. Typically a couple inches in diameter. Height: Flowering stalks rarely over 1 inch. Width: Non-flowering vegetation to 4 inches. Horticultural Notes: Available commercially. Transplants well. Once established, requires no irrigation. Emerges in late winter. One of the first plants to be active each year. Prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. |
