WATER DEMAND OFFSET PROGRAM: COMMUNITY GROWTH
WITHOUT INCREASING THE COMMUNITY'S WATER DEMAND
It is the responsibility of the DWP to ensure
that the available water supply is adequate to meet current
and future community water demands. One program that will help
the community achieve these goals is the Water Demand Offset
Program, which begins March 31st, 2005.
The following is a summary of the Water Demand
Offset Program:
- All new development will be required to offset their estimated
water demand by saving an equivalent volume of water elsewhere
in the system through plumbing or turf retrofits.
- A fee ($1,117/edu) will be collected which pays for the
retrofits that will produce the water savings.
- Administrative costs, for this program, are covered by
other DWP fees.
This program identifies retrofit "candidates" including the
following:
- Retrofits on change of service for commercial businesses.
- Retrofits on change of service for full-time residential
homes.
- Low-income customers.
- Turf retrofits for DWP customers.
Residential and commercial customers can apply to become "demand
offset retrofit candidates" by contacting the DWP office. Plumbing
retrofits must be completed by a licensed plumber hired by
the DWP and may be free to qualifying customers. Turf retrofit
incentives will be paid to the property owner and vary by the
square footage of turf removed. Check the DWP web site (www.bbldwp.com)
or call the office (866-5050) for additional details.
