CONSERVING WATER:
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY
We are very fortunate to live in a location that
gets occasional thundershowers in late July and August. We
can reap nature's harvest for substantial water conservation
if we will just take a minute to turn off our irrigation controllers
and refrain from watering by hand until the soil dries out
and our plants show signs of needing water again. Additionally,
the cloudy days substantially reduce evapotranspiration, which
extends the period of time before irrigation is needed. Keep
in mind that half the water used during the summer months is
for outdoor irrigation.
The community needs everyone to make it a habit
and take advantage of every opportunity to increase water-use
efficiency. The recent rains have presented us with an opportunity.
All we need to do is flick the switch into the off position
or leave the hose coiled for a few more days. A few avid conservers
are even capturing the rain runoff in water barrels at the
base of their rain gutters. If you are not sure how you can
reduce your water consumption, call the DWP for some suggestions
or visit our web site www.bbldwp.com. This site contains information
and recommendations on efficient use of water. Use this site
to learn how you can contribute to the community's water use
efficiency efforts.
