DWP'S DEMAND OFFSET PROGRAM
PLANNING FOR THE VALLEY'S FUTURE
Because the Big Bear Valley's future demand for
water will exceed the local supply, the DWP is planning ahead.
The Demand Offset Program is one of the ways we are stretching
our water resources. This program requires all new water services
and new development to offset their anticipated demand to ensure
that the new homes will not place any additional burden on
our water supply. This is accomplished by paying a demand offset
fee when a meter is sold, which is used by the DWP to increase
water-use efficiency elsewhere in the system. Currently, we
are paying $0.40/ square foot to remove lawn and replacing
high-flush toilets with super efficient 1.0 gallon/flush low-flow
toilets at no charge to our customers.
Speaking of efficiency, everyone in the valley
can help by evaluating their homes and landscapes for ways
to meet their water-use needs using less water. Indoors, check
to make sure that all showerheads, faucets, and toilets are
all low-flow/low-flush. Outdoors, find the shortest run-times
needed to keep your lawn and plants green and healthy. Many
home and business owners use 2-3 times the water needed to
maintain their landscapes. So, this is an excellent place to
begin your evaluation. If you are not sure how to check indoor
plumbing or evaluate your irrigation system, call the Conservation
Department at (909) 866-5050. We can help. If everyone does
their part, the community can make great progress towards doing
more with less with the valley's limited water supply. Please
do your part.
