INDOOR WATER USAGE

The typical household can save substantial amounts of water simply by using water efficient fixtures and taking care of leaks.

ARE YOU A CONSERVING HOUSEHOLD?
According the Handbook of Water Use and Conservation, an average household uses 69.3 gallons of water per capita per day indoors. A conserving household will use 45.2 gallons per capita per day indoors, for a savings of:

24 gallons per capita per day
63 gallons per household per day
22,428 gallons per household per year

HOW CAN WE SAVE WATER?
When determining how we can save water, it helps to first determine how we use it:

The fixtures that use the greatest amount of indoor water are Toilets, Clothes Washers, Showers, and Faucets, respectively.

REPLACING HIGH-FLOW FIXTURES, WITH LOW-FLUSH, LOW-FLOW FIXTURES
Take advantage of the DWP’s Toilet Rebate Program. Call the Conservation Department today to see if you qualify for the program and if so, to schedule a water audit.

REPAIR LEAKS
14% of indoor water usage is attributed to leaks in the home. If you have a leak, it can be a big part of your water bill. The DWP provides dye tablets that can be used to determine if you have a leaky toilet. Simply drop the dye tablets into the water tank. If water is leaking from the tank into the bowl, causing the toilet to constantly run, the dye will show up in the toilet bowl. If you are unsure if you have a leak, please contact the Conservation Department at 866-8937, to schedule a water audit.

WATER AUDITS
The Water Conservation Department performs 35 to 50 water audits monthly. The purpose of the audit is to determine ways that your household can save water based on current water usage, water fixtures, and outdoor irrigation if applicable. Call today at 866-8937, to schedule a water audit.
