CONSERVATION CORNER
PLANNING LOW WATER USE LANDSCAPES
It was great to get the rain and snow in the
Big Bear Valley in the past couple weeks. However by the end
of February, we still only had about half of our average annual
rainfall. Thus, it's a good time to consider and plan ways
to reduce your outdoor water use during the upcoming summer.
One good way to do this is to consider converting a portion
of your landscape to xeriscape. Xeriscapes are attractive landscapes
that require very little irrigation.
If you would like to learn more about xeriscape
landscapes, contact DWP, CSD, one of our local landscapers,
or nurseries. Also, don't forget to attend the 2nd Annual Xeriscape
Tour on July 10th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. On the Xeriscape
Tour, you can see what others in the community are doing to
reduce their outdoor water use, view attractive low water use
gardens, and get helpful suggestions from your friends and
neighbors that have been working on their xeriscape gardens
for several years. Creativity is a key component of an attractive
xeriscape. So, come and see how others have developed attractive
landscapes and reduced their water bills.
For more information on low water use landscapes,
contact your water supplier. They can provide plant lists,
photo libraries, and numerous helpful hints to help you get
started.
