WATER RATES: BELIEVE IT OR NOT,
WE REALLY DON'T WANT YOUR MONEY!!
One of the water conservation tools used by
water agencies all over the country is to increase water
rates. The reason is very simple. No matter how much we preach
to the community about drought and the need for water conservation,
money speaks louder than words! Thus for those who have not
yet responded to our pleas to conserve during these dry times,
we instituted tiered water rates.
Here is how a tiered rate system works. Typically,
normal water use is rewarded by providing it to customers
at the lowest rate possible (the base rate). The more a customer
uses above normal use, the more expensive water becomes.
Normal water use for a family of four is about 12 ccfs (1
ccf = 748 gallons) per month. Each tier gets progressively
more expensive and the highest tier normally ranges from
3-8 times the base rate.
Normal water use is based on the average amount
of water used by a family of four indoors, with modest outdoor
usage. Thus, the larger and more water consumptive your landscape
is, the higher your water use (and water bill) will be. Ideally,
the sting of an expensive water bill will encourage everyone
to use less water and stay in the lower water-use tiers.
This leads us back to the title of this article. WE WOULD
PREFER TO HAVE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TOWARD WATER CONSERVATION,
THAN YOUR MONEY. If you need assistance in finding ways to
