CONSERVATION CORNER
THANKS TO THE VALLEY
FOR CONSERVING WATER & FIRE WRAP-UP
Thanks to the valley's water conservation effort
this past year, we made it through the summer's peak water
demand period without any problems. Thus, congratulations
are in order for all those that contributed towards this
campaign! Keep in mind that many wells still have very low
water levels and without substantial rain and snow this winter,
water conservation will be critical next summer.
Thank goodness we were spared by the recent
wildfire! One of the byproducts of conserving water this
past summer was that we entered the fire emergency with full
reservoirs throughout the valley. Had this water been needed
for fighting fire, it was available. To help ensure an adequate
water supply during the emergency a number of CSD and DWP
employees stayed behind to provide emergency services and
support tasks for the fire crews. We want to recognize and
thank those that participated in this emergency duty.
Finally, a helpful planning hint for staging
garden hoses for fighting future wildfires. Do not open the
faucet before you leave. Due to the below-freezing temperatures
during the evacuation, many hoses froze rendering them useless
for fire suppression. Additionally, frozen hoses led to numerous
hose and pipe leaks causing expensive repairs, a number of
emergency shut-off requests, and water waste which could
have seriously hampered emergency efforts had the fire reached
the valley. Let the fire-fighters turn on hoses if and when
they need them. Thanks to everyone for their cooperative
evacuation and thoughtful preparation during the recent fires.
