CONSERVATION CORNER
ROCK GARDENS SPECTACULAR AND WATER EFFICIENT
Anyone who has seen a mature rock garden, in
photographs or in person, knows that they can be stunning.
The combination of color, form, and positioning of the rocks
and vegetation are often awe-inspiring. If you are considering
a few changes to your landscape, it may be worth your while
to spend a little time researching rock gardens prior to
breaking ground.
One special advantage of rock gardening is
its efficient use of water. The first advantage is due to
rock gardens being composed primarily of rocks, which require
no irrigation. Next, rocks are a nearly perfect mulch when
it comes to conserving water. Rock is impermeable which keeps
all the moisture from rain, snow, and irrigation right where
you want it, in your soil.
Partnering a landscape that is predominantly
rock with drought tolerant vegetation will provide the adventurous
gardener with a very attractive low water use landscape.
Keep in mind that even a fairly large shrub requires little
more than a 3-4" opening or crack between rocks and the interesting
shades of bluish or whitish-green of many drought tolerant
plants can contrast spectacularly with your favorite decorative
stone. So, don't be afraid to let your mind run a little
wild while you are conserving water with an attractive rock
garden.
