CONSERVATION CORNERLANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE:
EFFICIENT IRRIGATION, PLANT HEALTH, AND WATER CONSERVATION
Maintenance is a crucial endeavor for all landscapes. The best design will not compensate for poor maintenance. Maintenance includes everything from pruning and raking, checking for broken sprinklers, and periodically reviewing irrigation schedules to make sure that plants are healthy and exhibiting normal growth rates. Failure to execute proper maintenance can render a million dollar landscape dilapidated and unattractive.
Landscapes are designed to provide pleasant viewscapes, attractive foliage, and interesting blending or contrasting garden themes. If the landscape elements are not kept clean and tidy, the visual attractiveness of portions or all of a landscape can be severely compromised.
Plant material looks best when it is pruned, properly cared for, and irrigated correctly. Skipping pruning schedules and over- or under-watering some areas leaves vegetation in poor condition. Additionally, broken sprinklers or uneven water distribution by an irrigation system causes some plants to be under-watered. This is typically compensated for by increasing station run-times, which always results in over-watering portions of a landscape and reducing irrigation efficiency (i.e. wasting water). Thus, maintenance is critical for optimizing visual appeal of your landscape, healthy plant material, and water-use efficiency.
