STATE MANDATED WATER USE PRIORITIES
CALIFORNIA WATER CODE SECTION 350
The governing body of a distributor of a
public water supply, whether publicly or privately owned
and including a mutual water company, may declare a water
shortage emergency condition to prevail within the area
served by such distributor whenever it finds and determines
that the ordinary demands and requirements of water consumers
cannot be satisfied without depleting the water supply
of the distributor to the extent that there would be insufficient
water for human consumption, sanitation, and fire protection.
If the current drought continues for a few
or several more years, we need to be especially concerned
about having sufficient State-mandated water supplies for
human consumption, sanitation, and fire protection. Everyone
will need to eliminate all other water uses, if the water
levels in the Valley's wells continue to decline. Each one
of us needs to become a water miser in order to avoid getting
into a situation where the mandates of the California Water
Code must be strictly enforced. To accomplish this goal,
we are going to need everyone's help. DWP and CSD staff can
monitor weather patterns, record water levels in wells, and
research and present potential solutions. But the community
is the entity that actually conserves water!
"Community" = everyone! Please do your part.
